How to address top cybersecurity threat trends in 2023

As we approach the end of the year, organizational leaders are looking at how best to adjust their business strategies for the upcoming year. And not to be overlooked in those discussions is how the changing landscape is, and should, influence their security investments.

In an exclusive CyberScoop interview, Derek Manky, chief security strategist and vice president of Global Threat Intelligence for Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs, discusses some of the threat landscape trends in 2023, including:

• The rise of advanced persistent cybercrime.
• The expansion of “CaaS, or crime-as-a-service portfolio” as attackers look to further monetize their threats.
• The expansion of the virtualized world, like Metaverse, and how that adds to the attack surface

“We know about cybercriminals, we know about nation-state attacks and more sophisticated attacks, but we have these literally these two worlds, or entities if you will, combining together,” explains Manky. “That includes more of a focus on reconnaissance and weaponization, more targeted attacks at scale… and destructive ones.”

Considering these trends, Manky shares several technical capabilities that organizations should consider in their security portfolio to protect against these coming threats.
