Hutchins’ case has resonated in the cybersecurity community as some reflect on whether society allows good hacking to cancel out the bad.

Also known as MalwareTech, Hutchins was responsible for stopping the WannaCry ransomware outbreak.

Citing legal costs rising above $100,000, Hutchins solicited donations from supporters.

The evidence is under a protective order. A pre-trial hearing is set for Oct. 17.

"He is going to vigorously defend himself against these charges," one lawyer said.
